I grew up near the beach. Within walking distance of it. I now live much further away, but I miss the constant smell of salt in the air. Cottesloe Days is named after one of the local Western Australian beaches, and is inspired by striped beach towels.
Cottesloe Days is knit using a fingering weight yarn and is designed so you can use as many or as few colours as you wish. While the versions I made are long, it’s also easily customisable to make any length you wish.
You don’t have to make the crazy long cowl I did! I do like this cowl though. I used Madelinetosh 80/10/10 Fingering in Antique Lace, Paper and Seasalt. I wanted colours that reminded me of sand and driftwood on an overcast day, so when I wanted a touch of beach on a winter’s day, I had it.
The scarf version uses The Unique Sheep Pashmi in two gradients, Barrow Downs and Erin’s Dream. I chose colours that reminded me of the amazing sunsets we get here. Seeing them over the Indian Ocean, as you can over dinner in Cottesloe, is a pretty amazing sight.
The scarf
is a little different from most scarves. You can knit the scarf as your standard scarf, or you can follow the additional convertible scarf option. What this does is to add buttonholes to either end of your scarf, so that you can turn your scarf into a cowl simply by buttoning the ends together. Its a neat addition and one that allows you flexibility.
